OUR HISTORY
In 1870, Springfield Baptist Church was organized in a blacksmith shop on the Major Bowles property. The church was founded by Rev. Ned Starks and four others.
Reverend Starks served as the first pastor
First Deacons:
Josh Peterson, Andrew Harrison, Pickens Rearden, Miles Holloway, and Nelson Shephard.
Later, Major Bowles sold one acre of land to the congregation to build the church.
Rev. Ned Starks died on February 15, 1894, at the age of 104.

Second Pastor
In 1882, Rev. W. M. Peterson became the second pastor and served for 65 years.
Under his administration:
• In 1894, the old church was torn down.
• A second church was erected facing west toward Old North Martintown Road, which ran behind the cemetery.
• During the 1930s, the church was turned to face the new road, now Highway 25.

Third Pastor
After Rev. Peterson’s death, Rev. J. B. Bowman became the third pastor and served for twenty-four (24) years.
Under his leadership:
• The church was remodeled and painted.
• Electric lights were installed.
• Wood and coal heaters were added.
• A well was dug.
• The church was covered.
• A one-and-one-half-foot cement block wall was erected around the church.

Rev. J. B. Bowman passed in 1958.

Fourth Pastor
In February 1959, Rev. W. H. McCain was elected as the fourth pastor. He served faithfully for 45 years. Rev. McCain served us for 45 years. Under his administration and his help and guidance, on December 25th, 1983, we were able to hold our first service in this church, which is a few feet from where our first church was erected. On Monday, September 23rd, 1991, the present church was paid for in full and on Sunday, November 24th, 1991, the mortgage for the present church was burned. On Sunday, December 22nd, 1991, the cornerstone was laid. In 1993, the parking area was paved and marked off to accommodate over 100 parked vehicles. This was paid for in full in August of 1997.
Also, on April 10th, 1994, we began having second Sunday morning services in addition to 4th Sunday morning services.
Under his administration:
• The church was sheet rocked, painted, and completed inside.
• Pulpit furniture, a piano, and an organ were purchased.
• The church was bricked, floored, and carpeted.
• A collection table and communion table were added.
• Pews, a water cooler, microphones, restrooms, and gas heaters were installed.

On December 17, 2005, with Rev. John R. Brightharp presiding, Joe Quarles, Joseph O. Rearden, Sean Harrison, and Jerry Ryans were appointed trustees. Rev. Roderick Cummings was licensed under Rev. McCain’s Leadership. Also, Minster Cynthia Dye and Bishop Emanuel Spearman served under his leadership.

Rev. McCain retired on February 14, 2004, due to health reasons. He passed on January 14, 2006.

Fifth Pastor
On March 14, 2004, Rev. Nathaniel Langford became the fifth pastor of Springfield Baptist Church.
His administration ended March 5, 2005.

Present Pastor
On April 29, 2006, Rev. C. Moses Myers was elected as shepherd of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church. Under Rev. Myers leadership, he has licensed to preach the gospel, Minister Lynette Johnson, Rev. Michele Cummings, & Rev. Darren Jones. He is also overseeing Rev. Marilyn Chinn and Min. Annette Holloway
Under His Leadership:
• Sunday worship services are held every Sunday, starting July 2, 2006
• Vision Life Center was built and dedicated to the Lord on October 22, 2017
• Communion observed every first Sunday.
• The church has also purchased a 15 Passenger bus
• Bible Study held every Wednesday at 12:00 noon and 6:30 PM via Zoom
• Bible Study was changed from Wednesday at 6:30pm to be held on Tuesday at the HUT in Greenwood, SC, Monday, 6:30 weekly prayer via phone or zoom.
• Monthly staff meetings were implemented.
• A Pulpit Aid Committee was organized.
• Televisions, an LCD projector, a freezer, an ice maker, and computers were purchased.
• A recording room was built in the sanctuary.
• The Gospel Chorus and Senior Choir were combined.
• 2025 a digital sign was purchased and placed in front of the church
• At the present time, Rev. Myers and his congregation are working towards upgrading the sanctuary

Springfield Missionary Baptist Church began celebrating its 150th year of existence during the year of 2020. The services were changed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. We continued to praise and thank God with services being held on the church grounds and being aired on the radio and Facebook. Also, Prayer Line access on Monday through Friday, 6 am and 6 pm; Bible Study & Sunday school via Zoom Video on Wednesday nights at 7 pm.
Additional appointments and ordinations have been made under his leadership.
A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on January 22, 2017, for Phase I of the Pastor’s vision the “Life Center.” On October 22, 2017, the Vision Life Center was completed and dedicated to the Lord.
Under Rev. Myers’ leadership, the church continues to grow spiritually and in membership.
